Karen D. Simao specializes in licensing, zoning, and permitting to promote the proliferation of businesses in Massachusetts. Her clients range from sole proprietors and local corporate operators to nationally recognized and publicly traded companies. She joined the McDermott, Quilty & Miller team in 2000, and became partner in 2005.
Simao capitalizes on her expertise to benefit clients in the hospitality industry (including retail operators, restaurants, nightclubs and hotels) and real estate developers (for both residential and commercial developments). Simao excels at navigating clients through the regulatory and administrative process at both the local and state levels, as well as the related community outreach process. Simao’s practice extends beyond the City of Boston and her proficiency in dealing with complex business transactions and real estate development requiring various stages of approvals necessitates appearances at local boards throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Simao’s experience enables her to provide an all-inclusive approach to each business transaction and her commitment to clients is paramount in negotiating and drafting essential documents.
Simao was an author and editor of “Alcohol, Food Service and Entertainment Licensing” 2nd Edition 2014, and the panel associated therewith, as sponsored by the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education. She has also been a speaker and panel moderator for numerous industry events on the topic of liquor licensing and restaurant trends.
Simao is currently a Director of Silva Bros. Investment, Inc., a private lending institution specializing in commercial loans. An active supporter of the Portuguese community she has served as a director on various boards including the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers, the Portuguese American Center and Holy Ghost Society.
Simao is admitted to the Massachusetts Bar and New Hampshire Bar. She graduated Cum Laude from Suffolk University Law School and received a B.A. in Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics & Government from American University in Washington, DC.
